West Point Island lies off the most northwesterly point of West Falkland. It has an area of 1,255 ha (2,700acres) and is owned by Roddy and Lily Napier. The settlement is located on the east side of the island, in thelee of Black Bog Hill and Michael’s Mount. The valley between these peaks took us over the centre of theisland, to the dramatic Devil’s Nose and surrounding cliffs to see black-browed albatross and rockhopper penguins.

From pristine beaches to grassy tussocks, the Northern Gentoos of Carcass Island had plenty of ground to cover. I loved watching them make their way across this beautiful landscape – even when the journey involved one rather sizeable sand dune.Northern Gentoo PenguinsLeopard Beach, Carcass IslandIslas Malvinas / Falkland Islands2010

Whatever the hurry, this Kelp Goose certainly wasn't stopping to explain itself. The two gentoos, meanwhile, seemed happy enough to watch it pass by.

A little gentoo procession through the tussock grasses of Carcass Island. They might be travelling together, but each seems to have its own idea of the best way forward!

There's always something happening in a gentoo penguin colony. Some conversations seem a little more animated than others!

Two tiny gentoo chicks nestle beneath the protective warmth of a parent at Moltke Harbour, South Georgia. One peeks out quietly, while the other has its beak wide open – perhaps with something to say!

As if negotiating rocky ground and tussock grasses wasn't enough, there are waterways to cross too! This Southern Gentoo Penguin makes its way across a shallow, rocky stream at Moltke Harbour, South Georgia.

Still a youngster and very plump, this Southern Gentoo Penguin has some growing to do. Those rather impressive feet seem to be well ahead of the rest!

For Southern Gentoo Penguins nesting some distance from the shoreline, reaching the sea means negotiating rocky ground, tussock grasses and uneven terrain. It's quite a journey on those short little legs!

Skuas certainly know how to make their presence known. I remember the commotion whenever they ventured amongst the Gentoos in search of eggs or chicks – penguins calling loudly, rushing towards them and doing their best to send them on their way.
