Birds of Australia - Tasmania
Tasmania is home to a rich variety of birdlife, including twelve endemic species found nowhere else in the world. From familiar favourites to rare and endangered birds, the island’s diverse habitats offer endless opportunities to observe and photograph unique species in their natural environments. I’m so incredibly lucky to live in southern Tasmania, where the birdlife is abundant and I get to be in the company of such delightful creatures. As a photo tour guide and tutor, I'm also incredibly lucky to get to share my tips and techniques for bird photography through my business, Shutterbug Walkabouts.
With this collection, I aim to showcase the beauty and diversity of Tasmania’s birdlife, from the commonly seen to elusive species, as well as the endemic, rare and threatened species too. You may notice there are multiple images of some species, as I love to capture a broad range of shots including portraits, behaviours and interactions that make each bird unique, along with male and females, and juveniles too.
I am committed to practising ethical bird photography. I do not want to disturb their natural behaviour, so I never use techniques to lure birds into view, nor do I feed or deliberately approach them too closely. My goal is always to capture birds in their natural environment, ensuring they remain at ease in their space. Respecting wildlife and their space is paramount to me in every photo I take.
For me, it’s not so much about presenting the perfect shot; rather, it’s about sharing my bird photography experiences, the moments of discovery and the pure joy of being captivated by our precious feathered friends.
Disclaimer: Species name errors and omissions
This gallery is a personal collection of bird photos. While I have made every effort to identify each bird accurately, errors and omissions may occur. The identifications are based on my best knowledge and understanding at the time of publishing. If you notice any inaccuracies or have suggestions for corrections, please feel free to send me a message with detailed information so I can rectify the error as soon as possible.
